Where the cash counter goes

Tradition treats the south-west of any premises as the settled, heavy corner, and the north and east as the open, active sides. So the counter itself is best built along the southern or south-west part of the shop, resting against a solid wall behind it. The idea is simple: the money sits in the stable corner, and the cashier looks out toward the open, incoming side.

• The customer approaches from the north or east side of the counter.
• Keep the counter itself clean, uncluttered and in good repair.

Which way the cashier should face

The cashier, seated at the counter, should face North or East while billing. Both are accepted; pick whichever your shop layout allows without twisting the whole counter around.

• Facing North: the traditional first choice for handling cash and accounts.
• Facing East: equally accepted, especially where the entrance or light comes from that side.
• Avoid seating the cashier facing South, with the back to the north or east, if it can be helped.

The person's back should be supported by a wall, and the head should not sit directly under a heavy beam. These are comfort-and-stability points that Vastu has always emphasised for any working seat.

The billing counter, drawer and till

Within the counter, the cash drawer or till deserves its own care. Tradition keeps the drawer that holds daily cash on the closed, protected side rather than facing straight out to the door.

• The cash drawer opens toward the cashier, not toward the customer or the main entrance.
• A drawer or box that shuts fully is preferred to one left open through the day.
• Some keep a small image of the family deity or a kuber-yantra inside or above the counter; this is a matter of personal faith.
• The area is kept dust-free and orderly, since a neglected counter is discouraged in every telling.

Showroom and office accounts

For a larger showroom or an office accounts desk, the same logic scales up. The accounts cabin or the senior person handling money sits in the south-west block of the premises, working while facing North or East. The billing points on the shop floor still follow the counter rule above.

• Owner or accountant in the south-west cabin, facing North or East.
• Account books, ledgers and the safe kept in that same settled zone.
• Reception and the open selling floor kept toward the north and east.
• The main entrance and customer movement drawn from the north or east where the building allows.

None of this is a promise of any result. It is the traditional way of arranging a money-handling space, offered so you can align your shop with it if you choose.

When the ideal wall is not free

Most real shops cannot give the counter a perfect south-west wall. Vastu practice has always allowed sensible adjustment rather than demanding you rebuild.

• If the south-west is blocked, keep the counter as far into the southern or western half as the plan allows.
• If North facing is impossible, seat the cashier facing East instead, and vice versa.
• Where the back cannot rest on a solid wall, a tall, stable cabinet behind the seat is the usual stand-in.
• Fix the two things that matter most first: a supported back, and a North or East facing seat.

Treat these as directions to work toward, not a pass-or-fail test. Adjust honestly, keep the counter orderly, and follow whatever ritual your family observes on faith.
